Any fiction writer knows that the way to capture the reader's attention is through distinct and compelling character development. At its most basic level, storytelling features protagonist(s) and conflict. The conflict can either be external or internal (or both), and ultimately the protagonist faces the conflict head-on...
Of course, not all stories have happy endings. Characters sometimes die. And while that may be sad, their deaths are significant to the overall story being told.

Those of you who watch a lot of TV shows know that often in the longer-running programs, characters get cut. The actor leaves or the character is of no further use, etc. That character can't just vanish into thin air; there has to be an explanation for leaving. Unfortunately, the popular method for this is to kill them off.
